Starting a renovation: Basics
Ever wondered where to start and then automatically just thrown your idea into the too hard basket- well me too and probably a lot of others have been in our situation too. The first step is often the hardest in literally everything but once you get started it all seems to flow from there. Here are some questions to think about and ponder before starting the process.
- Why do you want to renovate?
- What would be nice to have?
- What would make things easier or make you happier?
- How do you live? Are you an outdoorsy family or do you gravitate more indoors?
- Where is your money best spent? (obviously where gets used the most in your home!)
The next step is to look at your home, no I mean really look at your home and the space/feel it has. Is your home recently built and more of a modern theme? Or is it a 1920s weather board home? Work with what your home is! Don’t try to make it something that it isn’t. Have a think about the style you like and see if this will work with your home.
Here are some common styles to get you thinking:
Hamptons
Scandi modern
Coastal
Modern
Mid Century modern
Art deco
Once you’ve figured out what you love and if it works with your home. Now is the fun part where you go down a rabbit hole into the world of pinterest (generally at 12am at night when one should be sleeping). I find pinterest has THE BEST pictures for inspiration for any renovation. Simply type in the style you love (eg. Coastal bathroom renovations) and scroll from there! Save away in a folder for later.
Have a good look at the pictures you have saved. What’s the reoccurring theme, is it dark, moody colours like greens, browns and blues? or is its fun and light with peaches, soft pinks and whites? Are there curves used throughout the design or any other design elements that are drawing your attention. Pick out what you love about these designs and that makes a basis of your mood board.
For example:
- Curves
- Timber products
- Big tiles
- Brass tapwear
Now for the fun part, putting it all together! Aka into a moodboard. Don’t stress the small stuff, it doesn’t have to look amazing or visually appealing like you see all over the internet. Its your thoughts/styles you love in the one place. I have attached one here for you to use.
